Libertarians welcome gays
by Jack Power
The Libertarian party offers itself as a clear alternative to the two-party system and actively welcomes gay men and lesbians, even in the face of a Democratic administration. According to Jeff Kanter, Northeast Ohio Libertarian chair, "Gay people are tolerated by the Democrats, and are shunned by the Republicans. But they are welcomed by the Libertarians, just as all others are welcome." The next meeting is on January 25.
The modern Libertarian party was founded in 1971 but traces its roots to the sentiments of the American Revolution. Kanter pointed out that "the founding fathers believed in Libertarian principles. We believe in the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as set forth in the Declaration of Independence, guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, and subsequently taken away bit by bit through governmental intrusion into our lives."
The party focuses on individual freedom and liberty, and a "truly free" free enter-
prise system that allows a person to prosper as he or she sees fit, without government intervention. This personal freedom extends to all forms of non-discrimination, including sexual orientation.
As to the low visibility of "third parties," Kanter responded, "The Libertarian party is moving forward to gain ballot status throughout the country. The results of the 1992 election indicate that there is a mood for change in the political process in this country, and the Libertarian party presents a clear alternative to the Republicans and Democrats."
An open forum is planned for the evening of January 25 at the Glenn Restaurant, 4220 Pearl Road, Cleveland, beginning at 7:00 pm. The forum will include a social period, dinner from the menu, program speaker, and the business meeting. "I hope to see a significant gay turnout at all of our events as we continue to grow. We need everyone's help in our efforts to gain ballot access to provide a clear political choice nationwide," said Kanter. Call 459-1831 for more information.
